Tell Your SF State Story

Strategic Marketing and Communications offers an array of resources for faculty and staff who are trying to spread the word about their work at SF State or stay up-to-date on the accomplishments of other members of the University community.

Sharing Expertise and Submitting Ideas

Faculty are encouraged to share their knowledge and scholarly accomplishments with the news media. Through the media, the University gains access to new, large and important audiences. By highlighting your achievements, we can help build support for and understanding of SF State.

The news team in Strategic Marketing and Communications advises faculty on media outreach, connects faculty to local and national outlets that are seeking comments on specific areas of expertise and issues official University news releases about major developments and accomplishments.

Strategic Marketing and Communications also helps spread the word about faculty by posting media mentions on its website, SF State in the Media, circulating media summaries to key administrators and staff daily, publicizing major mentions on social media and highlighting some media activity in CampusMemo and with the CSU Chancellor’s Office. Let the office know of your media contacts and coverage to ensure that others will hear of it, as well.

Faculty are welcome to:

News that’s appropriate for internal audiences (such as event notices or grant announcements) will appear in CampusMemo. Stories with external appeal (such as national-level awards, multimillion dollar grants or partnerships, or unique and inspiring student success stories) are more likely to become SF State News articles.

Still not sure if your story has potential for a news story or other coverage? Review SMC’s goals and criteria for content.

University staff and administrators responsible for a new program, innovation or policy that they believe should be announced to the news media should contact Strategic Marketing and Communications. Strategic Marketing and Communications is the only office that can issue an official news release on behalf of the University.

Administrators and staff are often contacted directly by the media for comment about issues related to the University. It is important to consult with Strategic Marketing and Communications prior to any interview. The professionals in Strategic Marketing and Communications can assist by determining the reporter’s deadline, gathering information needed for a response and advising on policies, rules and regulations relevant to the response. When needed, the news staff can provide basic media training. In the event of an emergency, the office coordinates emergency communications with campus-based and external outlets.

Strategic Marketing and Communications also helps spread the word about University mentions in the media by posting media mentions on its website, SF State in the Media, circulating media summaries to key administrators and staff daily, publicizing major mentions on social media and highlighting some media activity in CampusMemo and with the CSU Chancellor’s Office.

SF State’s digital signage system is comprised of 12 displays in key locations across campus. Digital signage submitted to Strategic Marketing and Communications for display on campus screens must first be approved based on a set of technical and content-based guidelines developed to ensure signage best represents SF State while maintaining consistency, readability and simplicity. Submitted signs could be an advertisement, announcement or PSA. If it is relevant and useful to campus and students, then it could be digital signage.
