Arts, Culture, and Creativity
Each year, SF State sponsors hundreds of workshops, lectures, conferences, exhibits, debates, forums, and other public programs at little or no cost.
In addition, thousands attend public performaces produced or sponsered by the College of Creative Arts: faculty and student recitals, the renowned Morrison Artists' Series Chamber Music Program, contemporary drama and musical productions, dance featuring professional companies and advanced students, and film programs. In recent years our artist-in-residence programs have brought to campus such esteemed performers as saxophonist Branford Marsalis. The world renowned Alexander String Quartet is the official qartet-in-residence at SF State.

A College with a Conscience
Just like the city of San Francisco, SF State is known for valuing activism, social engagement and service to community. The University is one of a select group of schools that Princeton Review calls "Colleges with a Conscience" -- institutions of higher learning that possess both "an administration committed to social responsibilty and a student body actively engaged in serving society."
Good will is an integral part of the curriculum. More than 300 courses combine academic study with community involvement.
During the 2006 - 2007 academic year, 8,743 students volunteered 424,976 hours in agencies and nonprofits throughout the San Francisco Bay Area. Valued at the state minimum wage, those staffing contributions total $2.9 million.
SF State has many centers, institutes, and programs that link the University to the Bay Area community and beyond. For a sampling of its community-focused programs, visit the University's Institute for Civic and Community Engagement online.
